Book Store Manager Dies at Age of 29; Funeral Planned Thursday
Marvin J. Slater, 29, of 1441 East Park place, president and general manager of Slater's Inc., died at 6 o'clock this morning, after an illness of a week.
Mr. Slater had been connected with the Slater book firm for 12 years. He worked with his uncle, Myron E. Slater, in the old Slater book shops, and succeeded Myron Slater as president and general manager of the new firm of Slater's Inc., formed a year and a half ago, when the latter retired.
Born June 25, 1901, in Chicago, Mr. Slater had lived here for 28 years, and for many years made his home with his grandmother, the late Margaret Slater of Thompson St., who died two years ago. He attended St. Thomas school, and was graduated from Ann Arbor High school. He also attended the University of Michigan.
In addition to his interests in the Slater firm, Mr. Slater also was identified with other business enterprises of the city.
He is survived by the widow, Florence C. Schaller Slater; a daughter, Joan, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Slater of Chicago; and a sister, Mrs. Richard Collins of Chicago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Muehlig chapel. Rev. E. C. Stellhorn will officiate.
