Garden Club Has Meeting With Gallup

The Ann Arbor Garden Club members got down to most practical things at the club’s meeting held last night in the Ethel Fountain Hussey lounge of the Michigan League, and kept Eli A. Gallup, city forester and superintendent of parks, busy for more than an hour answering questions or discussing suggestions on many subjects which demand immediate attention of gardeners at this season.

Of general interest was the discussion of damage done to trees by the recent ice storm. Mr. Gallup advised leaving the maples alone until the broken branches wither and the break is drying. When the sap stops running, Mr. Gallup said, the break should be cut cleanly and painted. Similar treatment was advised for elms, but the owner need not wait so long.

Other subjects taken up were the types of soil found in this vicinity, ranging from sand to clay; the content of natural and commercial fertilizers; the amounts and kinds needed in different soils for different plants; the use of sprays; garden pests and what to do about them; the principles of treatment and pruning of roses, and methods of grass cutting.

The annual supper meeting and plant exchange will be the May event of the club.
