National Guardsmen Will Hold Outdoor Manuevers

Area West Of City Selected For Mock War

Third Battalion To Make Armory Headquarters For Two Days

More than 350 national guardsmen, composing the third battalion of the 125th regiment of the Michigan National guard, will be in training Saturday and Sunday in the vicinity of Ann Arbor, concluding the current program of required outdoor training.

The troops will assemble here Saturday and will be housed and fed at the Armory, with Co. K here in charge of the local arrangements, under the leadership of the company commander, Capt. G. J. Burlingame. It will be the largest group of soldiers to be quartered at the Armory since the World war.

A parade through the city to a suitable place for review by the battalion commander, Maj. Wayland L. Miller of Flint, or platoon and company problems in tactics are being considered for the Saturday afternoon program. The men will return to the Armory for dinner at 6 o’clock and will have leave until ‘'taps."

"War At 8:30”

Up at 6:30 Sunday morning, the men will breakfast, have church services, and start at 8 o’clock for the training field which is west of the Barton Hills area. Capt. Kenneth L. Hallenbeck, former company commander of Co. K, and now a staff officer of the 63rd brigade, has assisted Capt. Burlingame in planning the battalion maneuver for Sunday morning.

This will include a “war” between two groups, the reds and the blues, into which the battalion will be divided. The public is invited to witness the war which is to take place between 8:30 and 11:30.

Guardsmen will arrive here in trucks and will unload at the rear of Barton Hills clubhouse, permission being given by Barton Hills Country club. They will march along the road to the high ground west of Barton Hills and north of the river, the site for the training. Mrs. William E. Underdown of Barton Hills, has granted permission for the use of this area for the exercises.

Disband At Noon

After the “war” Sunday, the soldiers will return to the armory in trucks and will be served the noon day meal. After a short critique on the “war” problem of the morning, the visiting troops will prepare to return to their home cities.

Troops coming for the training period include rifle companies from Flint and Port Huron, a machine gun company from Pontiac, battalion headquarters company from Port Huron, and a company of quartermaster troops from Detroit.

This training period is the third and final until next year. The outdoor program has been developed in compliance with directions issued by the war department some time ago requiring national guardsmen to receive seven days additional field training before cold weather begins.
