Defense Training Class Completed

123 Men Are Granted Certificates Here

Certificates of achievement were recently presented to 123 Ann Arbor men on completion of their work in national defense training classes conducted by the Ann Arbor public school system with the co-operation of a group of Ann Arbor manufacturers and the University.

Classes in blueprint reading, welding, and machine operations proved most popular with the workers, who are employed by local plants engaged in defense work. Shop mathematics and mechanical drawing classes were also conducted.

Funds for the national defense training classes were made available by the federal government to men over 18 years of age as long as they desired lo improve their skills in technical work. The types of classes conducted, within a limited range, were organized according to workers' demand. The workers themselves paid only for books.

Francis Pope, instructor in auto and metal shop in the Ann Arbor High school, is supervisor of the program and C. C. Crawford, acting superintendent of schools, is director. Six instructors were employed in the training courses during the 10 week period recently completed. Classes were held two nights each week and ranged from 2 to 2 1/2 hours in length.

Ann Arbor manufacturers who assisted in initiating the program were Neil Gustine, of the King-Seeley Corp.; David Saxton, of the, Hoover Ball and Bearing Co.; Joseph Buhr, of the Buhr Machine I Tool Co.; F. J. LaPointe. of the American Broach and Machine Co.; and George Langford, of the Economy Baler Co.

Mr. Crawford anticipates that the program will be resumed after Oct. 1.
