So that spectators may look inside the two-man Japanese submarine captured at Pearl Harbor, which will be in Ann Arbor Saturday, the U. S. Navy has installed glass-covered port holes and catwalks along both sides. The catwalks are shown in the above picture and the port holes are there, too, although not so clearly visible in this picture, taken at another stop on its nationwide tour to stimulate sale of War Bonds and Stamps. The 32-ton submarine, reduced in weight to 17 1/2 tons by the substitution of lighter materials by our Navy, is transported on a special tractor-trailer outfit 91 feet in length. The entire load weighs 75,600 pounds. The sub itself is 81 feet long. It first will be paraded through the campus and downtown business districts and from 4 to 10 o'clock will be on display on N. Fourth Ave. opposite the courthouse. War Bonds and Stamps will be on sale at nearby booths, but purchases will not be required for admission to the sub.
