Well Known Geologist Dies At His Home At Age of 84 Years
Frank Leverett, nationally-known geologist, long-time Ann Arbor resident and former lecturer for the University, died at his home, 1724 S. University Ave., early this morning following two weeks' illness. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Leverett, who was a staff member of the United States Geological Survey for 43 years, was known for his work from 1901 until 1929 as a geologist with the survey and had also received considerable recognition for his numerous scientific articles dealing with his profession. He lectured on glacial geology at the University from 1908 until 1925 and is one of a very few Ann Arbor men whose name had been listed in each issue of "Who's Who" since 1899.
The geologist was born in Denmark, Ia., on March 10, 1859. He was graduated from the Denmark Academy and served as a teacher there prior to his graduation from the Iowa State College at Ames in 1885. He entered the Geological Survey work in 1886.
Came Here In 1900
Mr. Leverett was married in 1895 to Miss Dorothy C. Park of Denmark. The Leveretts had been Ann Arbor residents since 1900. He retired from his work with the United States unit in 1929.
Following his retirement, Mr. Leverett devoted his time to research and writing. He is the author of numerous books and papers dealing with geological lines and was active in his work until only a few weeks ago.
Mr. Leverett was a member of the National Academy of Science; the American Philosophical Society; the American Society for the Advancement of Science, and the Michigan Academy of Science. He was honored by the University at the time of his retirement in 1929 when he received an honorary doctor of science degree from the institution.
Mrs. Leverett is the only survivor.
Funeral services will be held at the Muehlig chapel at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Edwin Redman will officiate and the body will be cremated. Friends may call at the funeral home.
