Staffan Funeral Firms Merged

Consolidation Due To Shortage Of Help, Directors State

Consolidation of the Staffan and Hildinger funeral homes into one unit was announced this morning Frank Staffan and Byron J. Hildinger, veteran Ann Arbor funeral directors.

The decision to consolidate their businesses came in an effort to meet a help situation that has become acute, the two men said. "This move will cut our overhead considerably and enable each of us to maintain our regular services without cutting corners,” Mr. Hildinger said.

The Staffan-Hildinger funeral home will operate at the present location of the Staffan funeral home, 513 E. Huron St. Mr. Hildinger has closed his home at 310 S. Division St., moving his supplies and equipment to the Staffan home.

Richard C. Gates, who has been Mr. Hildinger's chief assistant as apprentice embalmer for the past two years, will make the move with his employer and will continue his work under the new setup.

Individual Services

Although the funeral home will now carry the name of both directors, services of either may be individually procured by customers who might have a preference, the two men stated.

Careers of Mr. Staffan and Mr. Hildinger represent nearly 50 years of funeral service in Ann Arbor. Mr. Hildinger came here shortly after being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps at the close of the last war and purchased the business of Enoch Dieterle on July 6, 1919. He operated his business on Fourth Ave. for seven years before moving to the location on Division St.

Mr. Staffan, a native of Chelsea and son of a family which has been in the undertaking profession for 85 years, opened his business here on S. Main St. in 1922 but later moved to the Huron St. location. He is the son of George P. Staffan, Chelsea, who operated an undertaking establishment there for many years. It is now operated by a son. George L. Staffan. The Chelsea business is not connected with the consolidation of the Staffan and Hildinger businesses here.

Both Mr. Staffan and Mr. Hildinger are members of the National, the Michigan and the Southeastern Michigan Funeral Directors Association.
