Carl R. Breining, Sr.
Republican
Born in Wayne on Feb. 16, 1898. Attended Ann Arbor public schools. During World War I, volunteered for enlistment with Army Air Force; received medical release after about two weeks' service. Then worked in Fisher Body Co. in Detroit on manufacture of Liberty motors.
Entered into business for himself in operating taxicabs and trucking here in 1919. Retired from that business in 1944. Since then, has managed apartment houses and other properties which he owns.
Is a member of the Masonic, Moose and Eagles lodges.
Is married and has three sons and five daughters. Resides at 430 S. Fifth Ave.
His statement on candidacy:
"I feel that my past experience in business and my knowledge of city problems is sufficient for me to serve as alderman from this ward.
"I have made no promises to any group and I am not sponsored by any group or organization. I still make no promises. Therefore, I feel free to vote on all issues as they arise, honestly and only after the facts have been put before me; then only after careful consideration on my part."

Walter R. Garthe
Republican
Born in Syracuse, N. Y., in August, 1878. Attended public schools and business college in Syracuse, N. Y., completing business course in 1900.
Associated with brother in wholesale and retail meats and grocery business in Carthage, N. Y., about eight years. Then employed by F. W. Woolworth & Co. for 17 years, retiring in 1929 after having managed stores here and in other Michigan communities.
Elected alderman from First Ward in 1939, and has been reelected to that office three times since then for two-year terms. Has served on board of appeals for zoning, housing and building code, and has been a member of board of public works. Is now on city market committee.
Was named delegate to 1947 county and state Republican conventions. Is a member of the Masonic lodge.
Is married. Resides at 315 Packard St.
He said that he had no statement to make on his candidacy.
