St. Andrew’s Honors Lewis On 25 Years With Church

The 25th anniversary of the rectorship of Dr. Henry Lewis at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church was observed yesterday, with Joseph Bursley, senior warden of St. Andrew's, congratulating Dr. Lewis at the 11 o'clock service on his long and successful career.

Dr. Lewis, who became rector of St. Andrew's on Oct. 1, 1922, has spent his entire ministry here, with the exception of one year. Following his ordination to priesthood in 1921, he studied at Union Theological Seminary in New York and served as assistant in a New York Episcopal church.

As a leader in the Episcopal Church both in his own diocese, the Episcopal diocese of Michigan, and in the general church, Dr. Lewis’ career here has been marked by numerous activities.

Active In Church Affairs

He has served as clerical delegate to the general convention of the Episcopal Church which meets every four years and has taken active part in the recent issues of the marriage canon and the approaches to unity between the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches in the general convention last year.

In the diocese of Michigan, Dr. Lewis has served on various committees, including the executive committee. He is at present a member of the standing committee and is dean of the southwest convocation of the diocese.

In Ann Arbor, Dr. Lewis has been particularly concerned with work among the University students. The program of student work at St. Andrew's culminated this year in the purchase of a new student center at the corner of N. Division and Catherine St. At the present time the Episcopal Student Foundation with a full-chaplain and women’s counselor is located there.

Another activity to which Dr. Lewis has given outstanding service has been hospital work. Under his guidance the Michigan Institute for Pastoral Care has been organized for the purpose of furthering hospital ministry among the Protestant churches of Michigan. This group is now directed by a full-time Protestant chaplain at University Hospital. Every summer clergy come for a six weeks Institute of Clinical Training for which Dr. Lewis lectures annually.

Awarded Honorary Degree

Dr. Lewis was granted an honorary degree of doctor of sacred theology in 1942 from the Berkeley Divinity School from which he is a graduate. Dr. Lewis also is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.

In the spring of this year St. Andrew’s began a campaign for an extensive development and addition to the present church property. Within the next five years the church hopes to raise, a sum of $300,000 to enlarge the present property with the addition of a new heating plant, a new parish house, and a new chapel.

Dr. and Mrs. Lewis live at 725 Oxford Rd.
