Chappuis On ‘Time’ Cover; Is He Jinxed?

Time Magazine, which reached the news stands today, carries a color photograph of Bob Chappuis, Michigan's grid star, superimposed on a football on its front cover.

Inside of the magazine there are other pictures and a well-written story about Chappuis and the Michigan football team.

It is sincerely hoped that the Time Magazine jinx will not follow Chappuis into Memorial stadium at Champaign Saturday.

In 1939, Tommy Harmon’s junior year, Michigan’s team went down to Champaign undefeated after rolling to victories over Michigan State, Iowa, Chicago and Yale. The week of the Illinois game Tommy’s picture appeared on the cover of Time.

Michigan was favored to win that game by a comfortable margin, but Illinois furnished a stunning upset by winning 16 to 7.

That is probably why Coach Fritz Crisler is keeping his fingers crossed as he views the picture of Chappuis on the cover page of Time this week.

The Time jinx doesn’t apply specifically to Michigan. While many athletes and sports figures have been portrayed on the magazine’s cover without following damage, the jinx has grown to considerable proportions. For instance, Leo Durocher was pictured just before his one-year suspension from baseball; Elbie Booth met misfortune shortly after his picture appeared; Elizabeth Graham’s highly-favored three-horse entry lost the Kentucky Derby the week after she was pictured. There have been many others.

On the other hand, the week Michigan took on mighty Army in New York in 1945, the Cadets’ touchdown twins, Doc Blanchard and Glen Davis, were pictured but Army rolled over the Wolverines, 28-7, just the same.
