Institute Planned For Youth Leaders

Six-Week Course Will Begin On Feb. 24

A six-week Volunteer Leaders Institute to train both young and adult leaders of Ann Arbor’s youth groups beginning Feb. 24 was announced today by the Ann Arbor Council of Social Agencies.

Louis H. Hollway, city recreation director and director of physical education in Ann Arbor’s public schools, has been appointed chairman of the institute’s planning committee by William Robinson, chairman of the council's recreation division.

Hoilway’s six-member committee will develop training classes in six fields of recreational leadership. They will be held in Ann Arbor High School classrooms from 8:30 to 10 o’clock on Feb. 24 and the five subsequent Thursday evenings.

Open With General Sessions

The first hour of each of the meetings will be a general session in Pattengill Auditorium in which qualified speakers will lecture on techniques of group leadership, program planning, and other phases of the subject.

Hollway, a member of the council’s recreation division, said the need for such a training program was felt by the division when various youth club and agency heads indicated they did not have time to carry on extensive leadership training in the course of their regular programs.

Miss Faye Portner, assistant executive secretary of the council who is working with the planning committee, said the committee hopes to attract some 300 institute registrants.

Included in the list of organizations expected to participate are leaders from the YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Dunbar Community Center; all Ann Arbor churches and service clubs; the city’s recreation and parks departments; American Youth Hostel; all public and parochial school teachers; student religious groups; Ann Arbor, University, and St. Thomas High Schools; the 4-H Club, parent-teachers organizations, and the University’s School of Education and sociology department.

Six ‘Skill Areas’

Other interested groups or individuals may register for the institute by contacting Hollway or Miss Portner.

Hollway’s planning committee and the “skill areas” they will organize are Miss Laurie Campbell, social recreation, including folk and square dancing; Mrs. Arvid Andresen, music; Mrs. Harold Gray, crafts; Miss Kay Beckman, nature study; Howard Thompson, games and sports; and Douglas E. H. Williams, dramatics.

Fees for the institute have been set at one dollar for adult registrants and 50 cents for high school and University students.

Directs Course

Louis H. Hollway, city recreation director, will direct a six-week Volunteer Leaders Institute to train both young and adult youth leaders in handling youth recreation. The institute, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Council of Social Agencies, is scheduled to start Feb. 24 in Ann Arbor High School.
