St. Andrew’s Plans $215,000 Parish Hall

Construction Scheduled To Start Next Fall; Design Is Revised

Construction is scheduled to start early in the fall on a new $215,000 parish hall and chapel addition to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

According to revised plans, the new addition will be housed in a three-story structure built on the site of the present Tatlock Hall and on the property just north of the hall.

The building committee, co-chairmaned by Joseph A. Bursley and Victor H. Lane, jr., approved the change from a rambling type of structure to a more consolidated plan when it became evident that building costs on the earlier design would be virtually prohibitive.

Bursley explained today that the new type of building "would not only mean a lowered initial cost, but greatly reduce operating and maintenance expenses."

$150,000 Pledged

The church has already raised approximately $150,000 in pledges for the program, Dr. Henry Lewis, rector said. Between $50,000 and $75,000 additional is needed to underwrite the construction and furnishing costs.

The committee plans to advertise for bids about Aug. 1, when detailed working drawings and plans are completed by Prof. Frederick C. O'Dell and Prof. Ralph W. Hammett, architects.

Originally it had been planned to utilize the 67-year-old Tatlock Hall, but because the committee found it would be too costly to fit the former rector's residence into the new plans, the structure will be torn down and the stone salvaged for use in the new building.

The first floor of the proposed field-stone and weathered oak structure will be at grade level, with entrances on N. Division St. and Lawrence St. It will house a large recreation and dining hall with a stage. The room will hold seats for 340, or accommodate 250 at dinner. There also will be a boiler room, kindergarten and a large kitchen, with a dumb-waiter going to the second floor kitchenette.

Chapel For Children

The second floor will have a chapel, seating about 100, for children's services and small weddings; a nursery; a lounge; kitchenette; offices for the rector and his secretary; and a workroom.

Ten classrooms, a library, the rector's study and an office for the assistant rector will be located on the third floor. Four of the classrooms can be combined, through the use of folding doors, into larger rooms.

The pre-Civil war frame dwelling at 408 Lawrence St., on the north corner of the church property, will be moved to another site before construction begins. It is presently used as a home for the assistant rector.

Members of the building committee will attend another in a series of conference meetings on building plans at 7:30 tonight in the church.

Serving on the committee are C. Grant Barnes, Miss Adelia Beeuwkes, W. Lloyd Berridge, Robert S. Ford, Mrs. Richard C. Fuller, Mrs. Byron Hildinger, Mrs. Leonard E. Himler, Frank Huntley, Mrs. Donald G. Pollie, Mrs. Richard Ross, Mrs. Herbert C. Sadler, H. Seger Slifer, Mrs. Frederick K. Sparrow, Herbert G. Watkins and Peter Zahner.
