Dr. Kemper, Oral Surgeon, Dies Suddenly

Suffers Heart Attack At U-M Dental School; On Faculty 23 Years
Dr. John W. Kemper, 60, head of the University Dental School's department of oral surgery, died suddenly last night in University Hospital, where he had been taken following a heart attack.
He was stricken at the Dental School about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and died shortly after 10 o'clock. Dr. Kemper, a graduate of both the University's Dental and Medical Schools, had been chief of the oral surgery department since 1935 and a faculty member for 23 years. He was chief of staff at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital from 1929 to 1945.
He received a doctor of dental surgery degree in 1917 and followed with a medical degree in 1927. He practiced oral surgery in Detroit from 1917 to 1923.
Joined Staff In 1929
Dr. Kemper joined the University staff as instructor in oral surgery in 1929. The next year he became assistant professor and was elevated to the rank of associate professor in 1934.
He was promoted to full professorship in 1935, the same year he became head of the department of oral surgery. He also was consulting surgeon at University Hospital.
During World War I he was a first lieutenant in the Dental Research Corps.
Born Sept. 14, 1891, in Richmond, Ind., he was a son of Albert and Rose Lichtenfels Kemper. He attended Richmond schools and Earlham College before entering the University.
Wife Survives
Dr. Kemper married Marjorie Meagan of Richmond on Oct. 24, 1918. She survives.
He was a member of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club and the University of Michigan Club of Ann Arbor.
Dr. Kemper was president of the American College of Maxillo-Facial Surgery in 1947-48, and served in 1939 as a member of the National Committee of Hospital Dental Services of the American College of Dentists.
He was associate editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Oral Surgery.
He held membership in numerous professional, honorary and learned societies, among them the Michigan State Medical Society, the Michigan State Dental Society, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
The family home is at 320 Juniper Lane, Barton Hills.
Wife, Sister Survive
Dr. Kemper is survived, in addition to his wife, by a sister, Miss Hilda M. Kemper of Richmond, Ind.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Rev. Ellsworth Koonz officiating. Burial will be made in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel until noon on Monday.
