Ypsilanti Baptist Pastor For 21 Years Succumbs
YPSILANTI - Funeral services for the Rev. Garther Roberson, 55, pastor of the Second Baptist Church here for the past 21 years, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
He lived at 315 Catherine St.
The Rev. Mr. Roberson died Sunday following a long illness.
He had been influencial in the development of the Second Baptist Church, which today has one of the largest Negro congregations in this area.
The Rev. Mr. Roberson was vice-president of the Ypsilanti Negro Business and Professional League, a member of the Ypsilanti Ministerial Alliance and an honorary member of the Ypsilanti Community Chest board of directors.
He was born in Moundville, Ala., on April 11, 1900, a son of Daniel and Addie Fann Roberson.
Survivors include his wife, Estella; four sons, S. L. and Garther, jr., of Ypsilanti, Walter of Ferndale and Harold of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Garthonia Clark and Evelyn, both of Ypsilanti; four sisters, Mrs. Willie Hamilton, Mrs. Earline Odum and Mrs. Azzie Rutledge of Ypsilanti and Mrs. Beatrice Robinson of Inkster; and eight brothers, Elmer, Precious, Worthy and Frank of Ypsilanti, Daniel, jr., of Inkster, Charles of Cleveland, O., and Lantha of Bessemer, Ala. Eleven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Following funeral services, interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the Richardson Funeral Home until noon tomorrow. The body will lie in state in the church from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service on Thursday.
