It's Moving Day For Ann Arbor High School
Equipment, Furniture - Everything Must Go
More than 1400 Ann Arbor high school students left one building for a 10 day spring vacation yesterday. When they return on Monday, April 9, they will go to another building — the cities knew $7,650,000 high school on W. Stadium Blvd. just west of the Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. Meanwhile there is a huge job to be done, that of moving all the equipment and furnishings from the old structure into the just completed new one. That job began yesterday and will continue all next week. The pictures on this page, taken by The News photo staff, record the first phases of what is actually not “moving day” but “moving week.”
EASY DOES IT:
Godfrey Moving and Storage Company workers ease a heavy piece of equipment out of a van at the new Ann Arbor High School. The firm is being paid $8500 for the moving job, expected to take eight days. The work got underway yesterday, as soon as the students were dismissed at noon for spring vacation.
MOVERS BATTLE MUD:
A sea of sticky mud on the ground of the new Ann Arbor High School building on W. Stadium Blvd. near the Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. hampered operations as the big job of moving furnishings and equipment from the old building began yesterday afternoon. Here a bulldozer Helps a moving van driver extricate his vehicle from the goo. Despite the mud the moving was proceeding at a fast pace.
NO VACATION FOR HIM:
Spring vacation may have begun for most Ann Arbor High School students yesterday but not for Gary Denkinger, a junior, one of a number of students helping with the move operation. Here he wrestles a sewing machine into a home economics room at the new high school. From the strain look on his face it's obvious he's really working.
PRINCIPAL PITCHES IN:
Even Ann Arbor High School principal Nicholas J Schreiber got into the moving act. And News Chief Photographer Eck Stanger, who took this picture, assures us it wasn't posed!
STUDENTS HELP WITH MOVING:
Students are assisting employees of the Godfrey Moving and Storage Co. in the move to the new high school. Here they assemble school furniture in a corridor of the new building preparatory to loading it in vans for transportation to the new school.
BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS:
Ann Arbor High School librarians have their work cut out for them. Books are stacked everywhere in the library of the new high school, and it’s going to be quite a task to get them put away on the proper shelves.
JOB FOR A SCIENTIST:
Boxed equipment is piled high in this science room at the new Ann Arbor High School. Somebody is going to have to do a lot of unpacking and putting away before the room is ready for use on April 9, when first classes will meet in the new building.
