Drive To Help Students

FRIDAY APR 19 1974

The “Our Own Thing” organization will hold its sixth annual bucket drive Saturday to raise funds to send four Ann Arbor youths to study this summer at the National Music Camp at Interlochen.

The drive will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The goal is $8,000. It costs slightly over $1,000 to send each student to the camp. The excess money goes into a scholarship fund for university students who act as instructors for “Our Own Thing.”

“Our Own Thing” is a nonprofit organization which provides cultural training for underprivileged local youth Classes in music, art, drama, and dance and creative writing are offered free. Each year the students who make the most progress, or show “the most promise” are given scholarships to the camp at Interlochen.

The scholarship winners this year are Donna Calbert, 13, a cellist from Clague Middle School; Debra Calbert, 15, a violinist from Huron High School; Sylvia Harmon, 13, a cellist from Tappan Junior High School; and Rhonda Rush, 12, a flute player from St. Thomas High School.
