8 Plead Guilty To Soliciting

Fifteen of 18 men arrested for propositioning female police officers posing as prostitutes appeared in district court Monday for arraignment on accosting and soliciting charges.

Eight men pled guilty, seven demanded trials and court officials issued bench warrants for the arrest of the three who failed to appear.

The arrests, most of which occurred in the 200 block of South Fourth Avenue on Friday and Saturday, marked the first time Ann Arbor police have arrested customers of prostitutes. In the past, enforcement efforts have been directed at the women themselves.

POLICE OFFICIALS say they expect to continue using the tactic “on a periodic basis, until there is a measureable impact on the problem.”

Pleading guilty to the misdemeanor charge which carried a maximum penalty on conviction of $100 fine and 90 days in jail were:

Richard Darley, 25, 502 N. State St.; Gregory A. Smith, 30, of 2623 Dexter Ave.; Gilbert P. Lutz, 64, of 2022 Crestland Drive; Stanford Tucker, 30, ' 1678 Murfin Ave.; James R. Barnes, 30, of 2764 Page Ave.; Norman A. Catrell, 61, of 11240 Buno Rd., Brighton; Roy F. McCleery, 72, of 4670 E. Joy Rd.; and James R. Chapman, 29, 1950 Traver Rd.

15th District Court Judge Pieter G.V. Thomassen accepted the guilty pleas and scheduled sentencing for all ■ cases on June 9.

THE SEVEN MEN who entered not guilty pleas were:

Elias Soleimany, 28, of 523 Packard Rd.; Archie Allen, 38, 361 Eisenhower Pkwy.; Joseph Massey, 36, of 33 Water St., Ypsilanti; Robert M. Barnett, 29, 341 E. Jefferson St.; John A. Sklaar, 23, of 1404 W. Huron St.; Richard W. Bolgos, 30, 3965 E. Joy Rd., and Thomas J. Francis, 60, 1489 Ard-moor Ave.

Pretrial hearings in all the cases were scheduled for June 6.

Bench warrants were issued for these three who failed to show up in court: Clarence Elmore, 26, 1950, Woodbury St.; Ali Sadrpour, 29, of Belleville, 111.; and John R. Deveny, 57, of Edina, Minn.
