Woman ordained at St. Andrew’s
The ordination of Susan Ellen McGarry was held at 11 a.m. this morning, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
Ms. McGarry has served as deacon and Assistant Minister at St. Andrew’s since September, 1978, where she has responsibilities for youth and university student .work, outreach programs for newcomers, and liturgical and pastoral duties.
The service of ordination was conducted by the R. Rev. John H. Burt, Bishop of the Diocese of Ohio, and at one time a University chaplain in Ann Arbor. The sermon was given by the Rev. Katherine Mead of St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor. Among several participants was the Rev. Claudia Wolfe, vicar of the Church of the Holy Cross in Saline, and the Rev. Annettte Arnold, a local hospital chaplain.
Ms. McGarry is a native of Florida, and graduated in 1974 from Oberlin College with a degree in biology. She entered the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1975, graduating from E.D.S. in May 1978.
It is estimated that there are approximately 125 ordained women in the Episcopal Church today. There are eleven in Michigan.
