GELMAN MONAGHAN

Gelman has new chairman

FRIDAY AUG 22 1980

Gelman Sciences Inc., manufacturer of microfiltration products and systems and biomedical apparatus with headquarters in Scio Township, has a new chairman of the board and a new member of the Board of Directors.

Charles Jay, who bad been Gelman's board chairman since 1973, resigned this week because of health reasons.

He has been succeeded by Charles Gelman, founder of Gelman Sciences and currently President and chief executive officer of the company. Gelman will continue to serve in the tatter two capacities in addition to being chairman of the board.

The new board member, appointed by Gelman, is Thomas S Monaghan, founder and president of Domino's Pizza.

A native of Ann Arbor, the 43-year-old Monaghan was 23 when, with his brother, he started a small business in Ypsilanti called Dominick's Pizza. He bought his brother out and opened a new pizza restaurant near the Central Michigan University campus in 1961.

Despite a fire which destroyed the corporate offices in 1968 and chronic early financial problems, Monaghan eventually guided the business into an era of expansion and success. Currently the company, now known as Domino's Pizza, has 320 outlets in 28 states and is valued at about $100 million.

Monaghan is a graduate of the former St. Thomas High School and attended Ferris State College and the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Marines in the late 1950s.

Gelman Sciences was started with two employees in 1959 as the Gelman Instrument Company. It now has over 700 workers and its microfiltration products are used by industry to separate and measure substances in liquids and gases.
