Former Michigan wrestling coach. Cliff Keen, now retired, and former Michigan football great, Willia^ard, now a probate judge in Detroit, "were inducted Thursday night into the State of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Both men had been on the ballot for years. Keen was on the ballot in recog- nition of his 25 years of coaching success in Ann Arbor and Ward for his fierce play as an All-Big Ten football player. Ward also was a great sprinter, long jumper and high jumper and in addition to Big Ten champion- ships in those events, he claimed victories over the fabled Olympi- s, in head-to-head competition in the 100-yard dash and high hurdles. Although wrestling had been started n" th" M^h^pin campus in 1921, i really got the program moving. In his second year on the job M greats Wi.i.i, .^rd, left and Cliff Keen (1926), after winning a national championship at Oklahoma State as a collegiate wrestler, Keen produced his first Big Ten cham- pion, Theron Donahoe, and in 1930 1 t first national champ, Jun Airily. By 1929, Michigan had won its AP PHOTO first Big Ten tean , and a dozen more v» tn v^. By the time Keen ret had ^ 10 national champs and ( 'i Big Ten champs. In 1960 and again in 1965, he produced five Big Ten championship indi- vidual in one season.
