McLaughlin, Ollie

Age 58, died Sunday, February 19, 1984 at Sinai Hospital, Detroit, after a brief illness. He was born March 24, 1925, in Carthage, Mississippi, the son of Ira and Georgia Sanders McLaughlin. He had been a former Ann Arbor resident for many years, prior to moving to Detroit 14 years ago. He was married to Ruth Toomes January 11, 1958. He had been a record producer and music publisher. He was a former DJ at WAAM, formerly WHRB, Ann Arbor. He left radio after discovering Del Shannon, he also discovered Barbara Lewis, Deon Jackson, the Capitols and many others. He produced many top ten records, some of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Many of the tunes he published received BMI Awards. He attended Ann Arbor Public Schools and Columbia College in Chicago. He was a veteran of the United States Army, World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; one son, Ira Leon of New York City; three daughters, Karen Elizabeth of Detroit and Carla Ruth of Great Lakes Naval Training Station and Maira Suzanne of Detroit; one sister, Georgia Simon of Grand Rapids; three brothers, Maxie of Ann Arbor, Bobby and Herbert of Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 25, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Cannon G. Alexander officiating. Burial will be in United Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to a memorial fund, in Ollie's name, c/o of radio station WAAM. Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
