Circus coming to Ann Arbor this weekend

The circus is coming to Ann Arbor this weekend, featuring a Hungarian acrobatic troupe, high-wire walkers and performing miniature horses.

Sponsored by the Catherine McAuley Health Center, the Kelly-Miller Circus will appear on the grounds of the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport for the fifth straight year. Proceeds from the circus — estimated at more than $125,000 — will benefit cancer research at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, a unit of the health center.

Circus activities begin at 7:30 a.m. Friday with a free tent-raising at the circus grounds, off South State Street south of Briarwood Mall.

The annual circus parade starts at noon near the intersection of South University Avenue and State Street and will proceed through downtown Ann Arbor. It will feature four marching bands, floats from Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Parade and antique circus wagons from the International Circus Hall of Fame in Peru, Ind. The free parade is cosponsored by the Kroger Co. and American Speedy Printing Centers of Ann Arbor.

Circus performances are at 11 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the circus grounds. Advance circus tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children, and may be bought at local Kroger stores and American Speedy Printing centers. Ticket prices at the door are $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Tickets also are still available for the opening gala at 7 p.m. Friday, at a cost of $150 each. For information, call Rae Weaver at 572-5366.

The Kelly-Miller Circus also will appear in Dexter Monday.
