Bookstore completes expansion's 1st phase

An enlarged Shaman Drum Bookshop is ready for business.

The business at 313 S. South State St. in Ann Arbor has taken over a vacant downstairs area which used to house the old Continental Restaurant, says Trade Manager Keith Taylor.

The new section is 1,600 square feet and opened last month. By summer’s end Shaman Drum will also complete an expansion into an adjacent space that used to be the former Carl Sterr men’s clothing store.

The expansion will quadruple the store’s space to approximately 4,400 square feet. It will accommodate a larger selection of academic and scholarly books along with more literature.

Some CD-ROMs also will be available, says Taylor, who notes that Shaman Drum still maintains its anchor, an upstairs textbook section.

“We have always had a focus on the university,” Taylor said.

Shaman Drum also has extended hours, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from noon-5 p.m. on Sunday.
