Sink, Alva Joanna Gordon
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Age 102, died Monday, February 9, 1998 at her home. She was born December 14, 1895 in Rose Township, Oakland County, Michigan a daughter of Nathaniel John and Ella M. (Highfield) Gordon. On June 18, 1923 she married Charles A. Sink in the home of University President, Marion L. Burton. Dr. Sink preceded her in death December 17, 1972. Mrs. Sink was an active member of First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor. She graduated from Holly High School in 1914 and taught school in Rose Center, Hickory Ridge, Holly and a private school in Ann Arbor. She received her A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1923. In support of her husband’s role as president of the University Musical Society, Mrs. Sink hosted conductors of leading orchestras, prominent instrumental soloists, and many of the world’s great singers, in her home. She was a member of the Alva Gordon Sink Alumnae Group, University Musical Society, D.A.R., Ann Arbor Garden Club and P.E.O. Mrs. Sink was a charter member of the Women’s City Club and was active with the Red Cross. Survivors include her niece, Helen Gordon of Grand Blanc; a nephew, Clarence Gordon of Holly and several great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and by one sister. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 14 at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Robert Livingston, Rev. Terry Smith and Rev. Dorothy Lenz officiating. Private entombment will be made at Washtenong Memorial park. Memorial tributes may be made to the Alva Gordon Sink Alumnae Group Scholarship Fund c/o the Alumni Office, University of Michigan or to Individualized Home Nursing Care.
