Louise H. Niehuss was born on November 25,1914, and died on October 15, 2002, at Glacier Hills Retirement Community in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born in Ashtabula, OH she spent her early years in Detroit. In 1939, Louise was married to Roy H. Burgess, Jr.; he died in 1956. She married Marvin L. Niehuss in 1971. Louise received her R.N. from Johns Hopkins. Since 1956 she lived in Ann Arbor, receiving her B.S. from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 1958 and her M.A. in Guidance and Counseling in 1964. Louise was a visiting nurse with Washtenaw County Health Department and a school nurse and a girls’ counselor with the Ann Arbor Public System, serving Tappan Junior High and Pioneer High Schools. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, P.E.O., Book and Thimble Club, and Faculty Women’s Club. She served as a member of the Salvation Army Board, Women’s City Club, Thrift Shop, Neighborhood Bible Study, and Zonta. Her sister, Jean Simkins, preceded Louise in death. In addition to her husband, Louise is survived by her children, Kathy (Jim) Kapp of Wooster, OH, Susan (Gary) Burgess of Midland, MI and Roy H. (Joan) Burgess III of Fairfax, VA and stepchildren Margaret (Lou) Munchmeyer of Ithaca, NY and John Niehuss of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by her sister, Susan H. Sayre and brother, James R. (Jane) Hayward and two sisters-in-law, Betty Mulkey and Nancy Hoydal. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jim (Shannon) Kapp, Jeff (Lisa) Kapp, Lorin Burgess, Julie Niehuss, John Niehuss, Ann (Scott) Healy, and Kathy (Clint) Kendal; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 18, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 1432 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, MI. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Curtis Room. A reception will follow at the church. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Louise Niehuss may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church or to The Salvation Army. Arrangements by Muehlig Funeral Chapel.
