Every week we’ll cover a different topic. You’ll learn different techniques to tackle texture, chiaroscuro, and perspective, plus improve your sense of composition, lighting, and form. You'll get the chance to try out different mediums like pencil, charcoal, and pastel. All skill levels are welcome to participate.

Preschool ArtStart

Preschoolers can make art, too!

Join us for fun crafts for children age 2 to 5 years, accompanied by an adult.

Letterpress Lab & Making Type with Arie Koelewyn

Learn the basics of letterpress printing using handset type!

Workshop participants will learn how to compose, lock-up and print a small project on AADL’s vintage Kelsey letterpresses. Library staff and guest instructors from U-M's Wolverine Press will lead these workshops. Follow along with our scheduled activity or plan your own project—you’re the designer!

This week we'll also have a demonstration of how to create type using found objects by Arie Koelewyn of the Paper Airplane Press. Supplies will be provided and you'll have the opportunity to create your own printable wingdings.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS:

This program involves direct handling of lead-based type and is therefore not suitable for small children.

Hand Lettering Workshop with Jessica Krcmarik

Join us for an introduction to hand lettering, taught by designer and lettering artist Jessica Krcmarik. You'll learn typography basics, become acquainted with letterforms through practice alphabet sets, and get a basic understanding of design.

Bring along a favorite quote—Jessica will guide you through the process and help you to develop an illustrative style to bring it to life. You'll then learn how to sketch your design before going over various inking techniques.

By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to incorporate your new skills to create your own frame-able piece of artwork. The possibilities are endless! All materials for the workshop will be provided (but start thinking of a fun quote or some lyrics from your favorite song).

Screen Printing Lab

Learn the art of screen printing using materials you can find at most craft stores.

While screen printing can use specialized tools and processes, Modati Studios will show you that you don't need much more than a screen, paint, and glue. They will teach you how to transform your own design ideas into real world prints!

Materials are provided but you are welcome to bring in your own fabric or t-shirts to remake them with your custom designs.
