All six occupants of the home managed to escape unharmed. Capt. Arthur Stauch carried one elderly woman to safety from her first floor bedroom. A caretaker and his wife were forced to leave their basement apartment through a window. The dwelling is owned by John E. Stowe of 312 Juniper Lane, Barton Hills. THIS IS JERUSALEM: A few scattered houses, a store and two nearby farms make up the village of Jerusalem. John K. Bingham 124 years ago platted the village at Jerusalem Rd. and Freer Rd. He built a sawmill nearby in 1832 on Mill Creek, and a grist mill was located in the village about 1860, giving rise to hope that Jerusalem would grow into a thriving center. Its current population is about 20 persons.

The extreme western portion of the area (left side of picture) is not shown. Major boundaries of the total 75-acre piece includes E. Ann St., N. Fourth Ave., Catherine St., N. Division St., Beakes St., Depot St., the Ann Arbor Railroad line, Felch St., N. Ashley St., Miller Ave. and N. Main St. Prominent in the foreground of the photo is the new Courthouse. First step in the proposed redevelopment program will be the city's application for a $38,000 federal planning loan. With the money it will be determined which structures with the area need to be demolished, which ones moved, what changes may be required in street routes and what other changes are necessary to redevelop the area. Total cost of the project has been estimated at more than $3,500,000.

Mowing the lawn is one of the more onerous of spring and summer duties, especially around Ann Arbor, a city long noted for its beautiful yards. Here, Frank Hait, of 1201 Brooklyn Ave., gets an early start on the grass around his porch, and, for the first time in 1948, mows his lawn.

John Walton sits in the tanker truck while fire protection coordinator Wil Dane examines it. The tanker has a 1250 gallon capacity and can pump 450 gallons of water per minute. In the foreground, Duane Fuller polishes the minipumper which has a smaller 250 gallon capacity and can pump 250 gallons per minute. Both units were acquired at a combined cost of $145,000.

Roman J. Wojciehowski, commanding officer of Ann Arbor's National Guard unit, Company K. With Mrs. Stiede is her four-year-old daughter, Carol.

STOLEN CAR HIT NINE TIMES: This is the 1957 Thunderbird which State Troopers Darl P. Dygert (right) and Earl H. Fink of the Ypsilanti post fired at 11 times early today after the stolen car ran Dygert down. Nine bullets peppered the car, with one blowing out a front tire and another smashing through the windshield. Two men and a blond-haired woman in the sports car were still being sought at noon. Other bullets pierced the dashboard and sunvisor, but no blood was found.

Burnette (right), acting commander of the Ypsilanti State Police post, went aloft for 45 minutes this morning in an effort to spot the three persons who had fled the stolen car. Poor visibility cut the helicopter's usefulness and it was returned to the Grosse Ile Naval Air Station. Troopers from five posts and officers of two county sheriff's departments maintained a blockade on the ground this morning.
