Candles, The Authentic Way - Mrs. Jim Johnston of Washtenaw Road shows a finished product from one of her antique tin candle molds. Her interest in making molded and hand-dipped candles began when she found the tin mold in her grandmother's attic in the family homestead in Quebec. Candles on the sideboard made by Mrs. Johnston include the bunny and eggs, which were made by pouring wax in real egg shells (with the egg removed). Other candles are (from left) a hand-dipped one made from pure tallow, and three candles with strips of wax wrapped around, or backing, them. The strips were made by pouring wax on a cookie sheet, cutting it in strips and placing them on the candles.

Glassblower At Work: The ancient art of glassblowing is a long way from dead, at least in the Ann Arbor area, as evidenced here by David Myers, chairman of the Great Lakes section, American Scientific Glassblowers Society. Myers is creating a small glass animal at a meeting of the society, held at the Quality Glass Co., 2821 S. State and attended by about 20 members. Most of their work is done for scientific and medical purposes, but the making of toys, trinkets and fine glassware is still a valued skill.

Church Observes Harvest Festival Rev. Alfred F. Maas (left), pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, conducted the church's 20th annual harvest home festival yesterday. Among farmers who presented an offering at the Altar of Thanks was William Scheel, of Northfield township. The fruits of the fall harvest collected yesterday are to be sold at a bazaar at 8 o'clock tonight to aid church activities.

LOOKS OVER HIS SKY 'PULPIT': Rev. William Hainsworth, pastor of the Webster Congregational church for the past seven years, looks over the roof of the Dexter coffee shop from which he will preach at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, when he puts into practice the 27th verse of the 10th chapter of the Book of Matthew: "What ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops." Rev. Mr. Hainsworth believes too many persons practice surface Christianity but fail to introduce the principles of Jesus Christ into daily living. He hopes a roof-preaching tour, which he will begin next week and which will take him over much of the nation during the next month, will start people thinking about religion as a daily way of living. While Rev. Mr. Hainsworth has made no public plea for funds to finance his tour, an account has been opened in the Dexter Savings bank, where contributions for the tour are being placed.
