The houses were built by the John McMullen Building, Inc., on land formerly owned by the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, the rear of which is seen in the background. All houses were built speculatively.

DREDGE GRAVEL FOR 'WORK BEE': About 65 members of the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club turned out Saturday for a 7 1/2-hour "work bee" at Riverside Park. They took gravel from the Huron River and used it to lay out parking spaces for about 35 cars, framing the parking areas with logs. Kiwanians also mowed the entire park, trimmed brush long the riverbank and planted about 200 petunias. Here some of the 120 loads of gravel they used in the all-day project is dredged from the river bottom.

KIWANIANS PREPARE FOR DINNER: Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club members held their weekly luncheon at Prospect Park today as a "trial run" of a charcoal-broiled public chicken dinner set for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the second annual outdoor dinner and consume some 2,400 pounds of chicken, Kwanians say. Club members yesterday set up these cooking bins for the charcoal broiling adjacent to the tennis courts in the Ypsilanti park. Proceeds will be used for the club's youth work in the community.

It is easy to please everyone at a large Chinese dinner when there are enough dishes to include each person's favorite. When the Chen To Tai family of N. Zeeb Rd., Scio township, celebrates the Chinese New Year the first of February each child's favorite dish will be on the table. Here (left to right) Jimmy, Bing, Arthur, Julie, and David are having Chinese ham, beef with oyster sauce, sweet and sour cucumbers and fried mushrooms. Their parents, Prof. and Mrs. Chen To Tai, are from Soochow, China, and their hometown cooking is famous throughout China. This cuisine is a little sweeter than most Chinese cooking, and not as oily as Cantonese nor as spicy as that from Northern China.

SURPRISE, MOM - When Genne DeHenau told her mother she was going to run some errands Thursday, her mom didn't think she intended to do some work in the assistant principal's office at Pioneer High School. But the 17-year-old Huron High School student, with the help of a custodian, got into the office where her mother works. Genne's mother, Kim, is a secretary for Jim Clark, assistant principal at Pioneer, and Genne wanted to wish her a happy mother's day by surprising her with some interior decorating.
