Ann Arbor News, December 18, 1981
Caption
GIANT MOVES: A 25-foot statue of the mythical lumberjack Paul Bunyan stands guard in front of Pioneer High School, an apparent last-day-before-vacation prank by unknown suspects. The fiberglass statue is one of the twin landmarks of the Paul Bunyan restaurant on Jackson Road in Scio Township taken down last week as part of remodeling. Restaurant owner Tom Urquhart today managed to chuckle at the incident. He said it was stolen between 12:30 and 6 a.m. by six people ("There were six different footprints"). Now he doesn't know what to do with it. It will cost him more to bring it back than what Urquhart thinks he can get from its sale. So, Paul Bunyan will have to face demolition or stay at Pioneer until someone buys him. So far, there are no buyers for the statues.

Many of the trailer homes have leantos for added space. Not discernible are the many television aerials that dot the park. The 40-foot trailer coach (bottom) that is the home of the Paul T. Pohly family at Coachville Gardens Trailer Court on Carpenter Rd. illustrates the adequacy, despite limited open space, of such living quarters. Shown here is Mrs. Pohly and one of three children, four-year-old Richard. Behind them in a ceiling cabinet is a television set. Practice makes perfect Javon Hurston gets a lesson in defense from Eastern Michigan University forward Brad Soucie at Old Ypsilanti High School Saturday. The youngster was one of the 53 area fifth and sixth graders who participated in an eight-week basketball program sponsored by Parkridge Community Center. Soucie, who etched his name in the NCAA record books with eight 3-point baskets in a recent tournament game against Pittsburgh, helped officiate the league's championship game and spoke to the players about the role of sports in their lives. Afterward, Soucie dazzled everyone with his long-range shooting ability. This is the first year for the basketball program, which included five girl players, and according to Parkridge Director Ken Miller, owes its success to the contributions of several adult volunteers.
