The house was built by merchant Philip Bach - after whom a local elementary school is named - but has not served as a private home for years, having served as one of the first local fraternity houses, later as the sales office of the former Staebler-Kempf Oil Co., and most recently as a foreign car garage and showroom. Emmett Cox (left) and Carl Carter, second graders in Mrs. Jean Kelsey's Bach School class, put the finishing touches on their "Big Fat Pumpkin Man." The youngsters' Halloween friend was a class project and the subject of the following poem, entitled "The Big Fat Pumpkin Man," which was composed by the class: Mr. Pumpkin Man From Pumpkin Town; He's so fat he must sit down. We think he's jolly full of fun; On Halloween night he can't make us run.

A new six-classroom wing at Bach School provides a contrast for the architecture of the earlier building. Miss Jean Tuchalski's fourth graders enjoy a spacious new room in the addition. The students, like those at several other schools, were accomodated in make-shift classrooms during the first week of school when school construction projects were not completed on schedule. The Bach addition is now completed and other projects are scheduled to be finished by contractors within the next two weeks.

When hot weather comes, there's nothing as pleasant as a cool swim. And when you can take a dip in your own back yard, the prospect is even more pleasant. That is the line of reasoning which a few years ago prompted Mrs. Donal H. Haines of 1229 Traver Rd. to have the pool pictured above built in her back yard. The screen house at the far end serves as a sitting room when insects are bad and also is used by bathers for dressing.

Huron River Below The Hudson Mills Dam, July 1949

Huron River Below The Hudson Mills Dam, July 1949 image

Ann Arbor News, July 25, 1949

Washtenaw county offers few more beautiful scenes than the still waters of the Huron River, just below the Hudson Mills dam near N. Territorial Rd., a few hundred feet east of Dexter-Pinckney Rd. The original Hudson Mills were built in 1827 for sawing the lumber that went into the construction of pioneer Dexter township homes. Fire apparently destroyed the original mills, for history records a second building of Hudson Mills in 1846 for the manufacture of paper. Thomas Birkett, who acquired the Dover Mills in the mid-century, also gained control of the Hudson Mills about that time and operated the paper mill there.

CARP IN THE BATHTUB: There aren't many places in the average-sized apartment to stash a 33 1/2-inch, 19 pound carp for the day or so the fisherman might want to keep it around. But 13-year-old Jeff Cox, who lives in Trenton but has been visiting relatives at 803 E. Kingsley St. here, solved the problem by installing the big fish and a smaller one in the bathtub. Young Cox caught the lunker in the Huron River at Delhi Park, using a breadball for bait. It took him 30 minutes to net and beach the fish since he was using only an eight-pound-test line and a delicate fiber-glass pole.
