FACE CRITICAL OIL SHORTAGE: Shown here is the main street of McMurdo Station, the main United States base in Antarctica, where 1,300 servicemen, scientist, and explorers face a serious shortage of fuel. Supply ships, days behind schedule and miles away, have been slowed to a snail's pace by thicker-than-usual ice this year. Oil supplies used to heat the buildings, melt snow for drinking water and provide light and power are expected to be depleted by Dec. 9, even under drastic rationing now in force.

Eleven planes and 24 fliers came from Ann Arbor, forming the largest contingent representing any city there. Some of the small craft are shown lined up at the Jonesville airport. The picture was taken by Maitland LaMott, an Ann Arbor News photographer, who with a reporter accompanied the Ann Arbor aviation enthusiasts. Dawn Patrols visit a different community each Sunday, taking off early in the morning and returning usually before noon. Other communities the flights have visited include Howell, New Hudson, Adrian, Kalamazoo and Mackinaw City.

The flag, basically white, black and gold in color, was made up by a local firm on the basis of a design by Jean Winkelhaus, winner of a flag design contest last spring for students in the city in grades 7 through 12. A city flag originally was proposed by former Councilwoman Alicia Dwyer Pratt. Cost for the city of making the flag was $154.50, not including pole and stand.
