THE GRAYLING WINTER SPORTS PARK in the Hanson Military Reserve provides the best example of the growing enthusiasm for winter sports in Michigan. On peak Sundays, this sports center will attract more than 3,000 visitors. Taken from the parking area, this picture shows the warming buildings at the left. On the hill beyond them a crowd is collected around the ski jump. To the right, on the hill is the toboggan take-off building: the four slides are just beyond the toboggan conveyor, which is the long line stretching down from the take-off building. The skating rink and other downhill ski runs are not shown.

TRUCKLOAD OF FUN-SEEKERS: They are packed in so tightly there is no room to sit down and bounced in an open truck with no protection from wind or snow, and they love it. This group is arriving at the Grayling Winter Sports Park, several miles west of town. Trucks and busses are pressed into service to meet the snow trains which frequently bring more than 1,000 persons to Grayling on a winter week-end. Arriving by train and private car, as many as 3,500 winter sports enthusiasts may visit Grayling on a snow season Sunday.

A CASE OF WET SOCKS: There's nothing like a hot stove after and enthusiastic frolic in the snow. Two buildings, each 26 by 90 feet, offer warmth, shelter and refreshments to winter sports enthusiasts at the Grayling Winter Sports Park who want to rest a while. Some one should tell this young lady, however, that it is possible to get winter sports garments that are water-proof.

HERE'S HOW PROMOTION'S HANDLED: Civilian Conservation Corps labor, under the supervision of the Michigan Department of Conservation and the National Park Service, builds the facilities at the Grayling Winter Sports Park, but the community promotes the project. Pictured above are the snow queen and her court, who preside over the sports events and help the park get publicity. ERRANT CAR RETRIEVED: Looking as out of place as it was, this car is being gently removed from the boiler room in the basement of Mercywood Hospital, 4038 Jackson Rd. The hospital-owned car, driven by a hospital employe, crashed into the boiler room last night, apparently when its brakes failed in the driveway outside the story-high boiler room window. No one was hurt in the freak accident. Damage to the boiler room was not immediately assessed.

Don't Look Now... Signs sometimes make strange bedfellows. But so do municipal boundaries. An illustration is the entrance to the city of Ann Arbor on W. Liberty at Maple where a city limits sign is topped by one proclaiming the community's latest tribute of being named for All America City honors. The ballyhoo is tainted by signs advertising a dump site and saying "Dump at rear." But the fault isn't the city's. The fill area is an Ann Arbor Township "island." All America City signs grace most Ann Arbor entrances.

Sign Ordinance Provisions Being Met: Work was being done on this car sales lot sign this morning to change the flashing light portion of it to an area of solid illumination, in accordance with the city's new sign ordinance. The streamers over the W. Stadium lot also were being removed. The lot's operator was among more than 100 businessmen notified by the city that they had fixtures which would be in violation of the sign law as of today. The ordinance provisions which went into effect today apply to signs with flashing lights or rotating elements and to banners, pennants and string lights. Many other businessmen are acting to conform.

HEAVENWARD LIFT: Down-to-earth considerations of safety and cost prompted Pastor Eldon E. Weatherly to turn to the heavens for assistance in placing a new 300-pound wooden spire atop the Bethesda Bible Church, on Lowell St. just off Forest in Ypsilanti, Saturday. The spire was raised from a nearby field by helicopter at 11:45 a.m. and placed, after once slipping off, on its base in about 15 minutes. The above photograph was taken as a parishioner (behind spire) guided it into position. The Rev. Weatherly then climbed the steeple and held the spire against a brisk breeze until it was bolted down from inside. Coffee was then served workers and spectators.
