New Expressway Cutoff Opened: This $1,028,864 cutoff of the US-12 Expressway southeast of Ypsilanti was opened to traffic yesterday. The cutoff (center) carries through Expressway traffic from a point near McGregor Ave. to S. Harris Rd. (lower right). The former Expressway lanes (across center) will continue to be used for local area traffic. The project, slated for completion by Nov. 30, eliminates two sharp curves in the Expressway and shortens the actual travel distance by nearly two miles. Part of the West Willow Subdivision area is at top left.

New School Progress: Construction work is rising above ground level on a new $1,500,000 junior high school to serve the western half of the Ypsilanti School District. The school, located in Ypsilanti township, will face N. Mansfield Ave. between Pearl and Grant Sts. Construction of a similar junior high to serve the eastern portion of the district is scheduled to get under way this fall at a site northwest of Tyler Rd. and Emerick St. The west side school is expected to be completed in about a year.

Leforge Rd. Relocation Approved: The Ypsilanti City Council last night approved a plan which will relocate Leforge Rd. 18 feet to the east in front of the Peninsular Paper Co. (above). The change was necessary to permit construction of a $350,000 addition to the plant without encroaching on the road's right-of-way. The addition will be built north of the main Peninsular building. The roadway will be moved to the east (left above) between the New York Central Railroad tracks and the LeForge Rd. bridge.

PUMPKIN POLE: Gary and Marty Rauser have begun a Halloween tradition in their yard at 2618 Sequoia in Scio Township: a pumpkin totem pole. They got the idea from Gary's mother, who had a similar display at her home, 2060 W. Liberty, each Halloween for the past 15 to 20 years. She died in January. 'Now we'll be doing it every year,' Marty Rauser says.

WILLOW RUN STILL ACTIVE: An estimated 62 per cent of the domestic air travel at Detroit now passes through Willow Run Airport, the main base for commercial airlines since 1946, although four carriers have switched to Detroit Metropolitan Airport since last Oct 1. Still undecided is the question of whether the remaining seven airlines will move away from Willow Run, thus abandoning the airfield as a commercial airport. The Wayne-Washtenaw counties, north-south dividing line, passes in front (east) of the terminal and the adjacent Detroit Transmission Division plant.

Smaller-Car Factory Site: This is an aerial view of the new, multi-million dollar General Motors Corp. plant at Willow Run. An announcement from GM today was expected to end widespread speculation for the past 13 months that the auto firm would make a small type car, and that it would be produced at Willow Run east of Ypsilanti. The new assembly plant (1) is directly east of and connected to the former Chevrolet Truck Plant (2). A railroad siding (3), expanded at a cost of nearly $300,000, will service the new plant and now has a capacity for storing up to 125 box cars. GM's "first" plant at Willow Run is the former Ford Bomber Plant (4) which General Motors purchased five years ago for its Detroit Transmission Division.

The blended ingredients are mixed en route to the job.

Exactly 78 plastic bags full of leaves, twigs and other natural yard refuse left over by winter are neatly lined up along the curb waiting to be collected by city trucks. The outdoor spring cleanup project that produced such sizeable results was conducted all last week after school by the Browns' son, Bill, and two friends. At a quarter a bag, a kid could get rich.

At left is the $290,000 municipal carport at First and Washington Sts., only one block south of Huron St. and two blocks west of Main St. At right [not pictured here] is the city parking lot on S. Fifth Ave. between William and Washington Sts., only one block east of Main St. Both parking areas, therefore, are within one block of the main business districts. One other major city lot, the Maynard St. lot, which is not shown in the pictures, is only located one block from the State St. campus shopping and business area.
