It is usually considered a noteworthy ciroumstance for a man or woman to be mariyed three times, but in ■ olden times the number would liave been thought little of. St. Jerome mentions a widosv who married her twenty-seeond husband, who in his turn had been married to twentytwo wives. A woman named Elizabeth Mast, who. died at Florence in 17ö8, had been married to seven husbands, all of whom she outlived. She I raarned the last of the seven. at the :ige of 70. When on her death-bed she recalled the g'ood and bad points of each of her hnsbands and, impurtially weighed them in thu balance, s!ie singfled oul her fifth spóuse as the favorite, and desired her remairis raight be interred near his.
