Washington, Feb. 11.- Turpio í'n the senato and Cooper in the house, both oí Indiana, havo introduced resolutions providing for the appointment of a eoinrnission undor the direction of the secretaiy of war to makc n prelinnnary survey and submit plans and etimates for the construction of a ship canal to connect the tho south end of Lako Michigan with tho Wabash river. Attention has boen called to the laso survey and report by Major Gillespie, wh mentionoa teveral routes to reaeh the Wabash frorn L,ako Michigan, but afcer makíng hla examinations recommends as tho best route that selected by Captain títansbury in 1831, whcn he reportad co General Cass. The trouble that Major Gillespie flnds I is getting arouiid the Kankakoe river, the water of wliich is needed by the Illinois river. The Kankakee river runs parallel with the south end of Lake Michigan and if it is cut in two the w.tcér supply of the Illinois river would ba seriously ondangered. In getting ai-.i.ind the Kankakee Major Gillespie si.nted bis canal at Michigan City, Ind., and carried it east of the Kankakee by the way of Ut. Michacls. He claims that plenty of water could be obtained in that way to supply the canal.
