Crowded conditionif are being experienced this week at several schools in the Ann Arbor District because of a delay in installing portable classrooms. The overcrowding has resulted in holding classes in places such as auditoriums and cafeterías. At the two high schools, study halls have also been greatly overcrowded, sometimes with as many as 200 students being assigned to rooms with seats for about 100. The reason for the crowded study halls at the high schools is that every student must take at least one study hall this year. This is a result of the June 8 millage defeat, which in turn resulted in students being forced to take one less elective because of financial problems and sit in a study hall insteacl The principáis at Pioneer High and Hurón High say steps are being taken to alleviate the j a m m e d study halls. Those plans will be announced next week. Some 18 portable classrooms which are to be relocated from other schools in the school district have not yet been installed, due to a number of factors. Three new portables also have not been installed. The result has been crowding at Clinton, Northside, Pittsfield, Dixboro and Pattengill tary schools, as well as Scarlett Junior High and Pioneer High. Three reasons have been given by school officials for the delays: - No final decisions on placement of portables c o u 1 d be made until negotiations on class sizes were completed with the Ann Arbor Education Association. Talks were not finished until mid-August. - School began a week earlier than usual this year. -The contractors moving the portables discovered their normal trucks for moving were not adequate for the older type of portables. So trucks had to be altered or borrowed. John Hubley, assistant superintendent for community services, says Pioneer High should have its 5 additional portables by Sept. 8; Clinton Elementary its additional se ven by today; Scarlett Junior High its additional two by Sept. 9; Northside Elementary its additional two by Sept. 9; Pittsfield Elementary its additional two by Sept. 11; Dixboro Elementary its additional one by Sept. 11, and Pattengill Elementary its additional two as soon as possible. ' Planner-Expediter S o o r e n Gozmanian says he is "making every effort" to get the portables moved and installed as quickly as possible.
