y " f I The 80th Annual May Festival is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Charles A. Sink, associated with the affairs of the University Musical Society from the year of his graduation from the U-M in 1904 until his death Dec. 17, 1972. Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 8, offered by Sen. Gilbert A. Bursley as a memorial to Dr. Sink, states: "Whereas, The recent death of Dr. Charles A. Sink has taken from our midst a man who made invaluable contributions to the University of Michigan, the community of Ann Arbor, and the State; and Whereas , Dr. Sink was bom on July 4, 1879, in Westernville, N. Y., and attended high s c h o o 1 in Churchville, N.Y., prior to enrolling at t h e University of Michigan where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1904; and Whereas, Dr. Sink served the University Musical Society for 64 years, first as Secretary and Manager from 1904 to 1927, and then as. president until 1968. He was instrumental in bringing many of the world's great musical groups and individual artists to the City for more than half a cen tury; and helped build the M u s i c Department intó a I leading school of music ia the I nation; and Whereas, Bringing great I music to Michigan was not I the only public service he perI formed during his busy life. I Dr. Sink served 10 years as a State Legislator, as a State Representative in 1919-1920 and 1925-1926, and as a State Senator in 1921-1922 and 19271928 and 1929-1930. He also was a three-term member of the Ann Arbor City Council and was President of the Ann Arbor Board of Education. While in the Legislature he served on the Education committees of both houses; and Whereas, During World War I he took an active part in civic and patriotic m o v ements, was awarded the King Albert Medal by Belgium for relief work in connection with starving Belgian children, and was made a member of the Belgian League of Honor. He also was cited by the governments of Denmark and the Netherlands for his services in bringing orchestras from those countries to give performances in America; and Whereas, He was a founder and member of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club, served as a trustee of the First Congregational Church of Annn Arbor, and was a member of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Acacia, Phi Mu Alpha and Alpha Epsilon Mu college fraterni tïes, a member of numerous professional and honorary societies and organizations, and the recipiënt of several honorary degrees, and Whereas, During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Sinlc continually gave of himself to a greater extent than can be expected of any single citizen, honestly dedicating his efforts without restraint, to the welfare of his fellow citizens. His memory as a servant of humanity will I stand in e ach citizen's mind I as an eternal memorial; now therefore be it Resolved by The Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the Michigan Legislature accord a memorial tribute to Dr. Charles A. Sink; and be it further I Resolved, That a copy of this tribute be transmitted to Mrs. Charles Sink, the Board of Regents, and the University Musical Society in testimony of the high regard in which the life and memory of this great man is held by the Michigan Legislature."
