College Board Briefs

An Educational Opportunity Grant of $82,830 to aid needy 'students between July 1 and June 30, 1969, has been approved for Washtenaw Community College by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare and was accepted by the WCC board last night. The federal program is intended to aid students of exceptional financial need who would not be able tu enter or remain in college without such assistance. The maximum student grant for one year is $800. These funds are to be used in combination with other scholarship funds and work-study jobs to aid the students. o o Gifts f? the industrial-technical programs and the Learning Materials Center were received by the WCC trustees. Gifts íor the technical división included a multipoint indidicating pyrometer for the metallurgical división f r o m the West Instrument Co., a subsidiary of Industrial Temperature Control Co. of Dearborn; and a set of Sweet's File for the architectural drafting program from John Hunter, president of Porcelain Building Products, Inc. of Ann Arbor. Learning Materials Center gifts are a painting from Miss Evelyn Schaerer of Ypsilanti, a sculpture from Harold Young, center director, and books from Philip Johnson, Ann Arbor, Mrs. William P. Bennett and Mrs. Daniel T. Lyons, both of Pinckney. o o The trustees approved an additional grant of not more than $500 to help complete the cational-Technical Educational Opportunities Study for Washtenaw and Livingston Counties which is Si, 000 over its budget. The coiiege had previously contributed $5,000 for the study. Other participating units involved in the financing are the intermedíate school districts of the two counties and the state. The report will be used in determining what direction the two counties and their individual schools districts should take in providing secondary school level vocational-technical education.
