Fire broke out in the residence of the late Samuel 1'. Jewett on West Iluron street last Friday evening at eleven o'clock. Some little time elapsed before the alarm was souudecl and when the fire bell first rung, citizens rushed to their windows to hnd the sky aglow. The department turned out quickly and did what they could toward stayïng the ravages oí the flames. ïhe f urniture was removed from the house, even the parlor carpetsbeing taken up. The f urniture was howe'ver badly darnaged. The flre was extinguished before the house was entirely burned to the ground, yet it was left aimost a totalwreck. The house was unoccupied excepting two rooms, occupied by a student and bis wife. There was a öre in the grate and it is supposed the fire caught from the chimney. Mr. Jewett diü not carry any insurance. Judge Kinne. for the benefit of the estáte, had placed an insurance of 2,000 on the building, only a week before the flre, in the Commercial Union of London. There was no insurance on the f urniture. The loss on the buildinsr is S4.000.
