Celebrating Our Own Thing

by amy

Image removed.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Our Own Thing organization here in Ann Arbor. With Black History Month upon us, now is a great time to acknowledge the work of this incredible group started in 1968 by Dr. Willis C. Patterson, Singer A. "Bucky" Buchanan, Jon Lockard, and Vera Embree. Countless African-American students in the area have benefited from the cultural arts instruction provided by Our Own Thing, as well as their scholarship program which has sent numerous young artists and musicians to Interlochen Arts Academy. Watch the interview of Dr. Patterson from the AACHM (African American Cultural & Historical Museum) Living Oral History Project for a deeper look into the organization and the amazing man behind the scene.

Washtenaw Literacy has announced that they are offering an ESL Personal Tutoring option. Suicide Prevention and Addiction Program

by monkk

"Suicide Prevention and Addiction" will be presented by Dawn Farm on Tuesday January 31, 2017 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Education Center auditorium. The prevalence of suicide and suicide attempts among people with alcohol/other drug addictions is alarmingly high. Family, friends and peers as well as helping professionals are often in a position to notice potential suicidal thinking and encourage a person contemplating suicide to obtain help. Educating people on how to recognize signs of suicidal thinking, and how to obtain help for themselves or others may change the outcome for a person considering suicide and can save lives. This program will raise awareness of the signs of suicidal thinking, and describe ways to offer support and obtain help for people who may be contemplating suicide. Participants will learn how to recognize suicidal thinking, reach out and offer support to others contemplating suicide, obtain help when suicidal thoughts are present, and access local and national suicide prevention and intervention resources.

The program will be presented by Raymond Dalton, MA, CAADC. Mr. Dalton is the Program Coordinator for Dawn Farm Outpatient, Community Corrections and Youth and Family Services. Prior to working for Dawn Farm he recruited, trained and supervised volunteer counselors to answer the suicide prevention hotline for the state of Kansas.

This program is free and open to all. Anyone with a personal or professional interest is welcome to attend. The program provides 1.5 hours of free CE for addiction professionals (approved by MCBAP and NAADAC.) A certificate to document attendance can be provided. Registration is not required.

For more information please call 734/485-8725 or email info@dawnfarm.org.
