Suicide Prevention and Addiction Program
by monkk
"Suicide Prevention and Addiction" will be presented by Dawn Farm on Tuesday January 31, 2017 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Education Center auditorium. The prevalence of suicide and suicide attempts among people with alcohol/other drug addictions is alarmingly high. Family, friends and peers as well as helping professionals are often in a position to notice potential suicidal thinking and encourage a person contemplating suicide to obtain help. Educating people on how to recognize signs of suicidal thinking, and how to obtain help for themselves or others may change the outcome for a person considering suicide and can save lives. This program will raise awareness of the signs of suicidal thinking, and describe ways to offer support and obtain help for people who may be contemplating suicide. Participants will learn how to recognize suicidal thinking, reach out and offer support to others contemplating suicide, obtain help when suicidal thoughts are present, and access local and national suicide prevention and intervention resources.
The program will be presented by Raymond Dalton, MA, CAADC. Mr. Dalton is the Program Coordinator for Dawn Farm Outpatient, Community Corrections and Youth and Family Services. Prior to working for Dawn Farm he recruited, trained and supervised volunteer counselors to answer the suicide prevention hotline for the state of Kansas.
This program is free and open to all. Anyone with a personal or professional interest is welcome to attend. The program provides 1.5 hours of free CE for addiction professionals (approved by MCBAP and NAADAC.) A certificate to document attendance can be provided. Registration is not required.
For more information please call 734/485-8725 or email info@dawnfarm.org.
Safe and Effective Management of Pain & Addiction
by Beth Manuel
The Institute of Medicine estimates that around a 100 million Americans suffer with chronic pain, & it’s estimated that about 10% of our population has or has had a substance use disorder. People with pain deserve relief and there are many strategies for both acute and chronic pain management that are safe and effective for people at risk of or in recovery from substance use disorders.
You’re invited to learn about Safe and Effective Management of Pain and Addiction on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the SJMH Education Center. Learn from local addictionologists and pain management specialists Dr. Carl Christensen, MD, Ph.D., FACOG, FASAM, ABAM; and Dr. Mark A. Weiner, MD, about various methods of both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management; their relative risks and benefits, and describe creative approaches to effective pain relief for people in recovery from substance use disorders.
