ERECT SHELTER SIGNS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today began the placement of signs on Ann Arbor buildings that will be used as public fallout shelters. The first sign was placed at the YM-YWCA downtown. Looking on are (from the left) City Administrator Guy C. Larcom, jr., Joseph Derkowski, of the corps, Dr. H. R. Shipman, city Civil Defense director, and Mayor Cecil O. Creal. Twenty-three buildings will be used as shelters. Equipment is expected to be brought here beginning Wednesday. The supplies from federal sources will be put into the various shelters.

TESTING FOR RADIOACTIVITIY: Mrs. Dale Perin (above) of 1608 Ferndale St., called the Civil Defense office this morning when she found a bottle on her mantle with a label reading: "Caution: Radioactive Material." Charles Knorpp of the Civil Defense control center group on radioactivity tests the bottle with a Geiger counter but finds no trace of radioactivity. Ann Arbor Police Officer Walk Hawkins assists him. Knorpp said the bottle probably contained radioactive iodine at one time. Mrs. Perin said she did not know how the bottle got into her house.

READY FOR ALERT: Two police officers put barricades in place at Washington and Main Sts. as sirens warn motorists and pedestrians in downtown Ann Arbor of a "bomber attack." The parked cars have been deserted by motorists who were instructed to go into nearby stores during the five minute test.

CITIZENS TAKE COVER: These people are waiting in Peck's Drug Store on Main St. for the end of the "take cover" signal which was denoted by the blowing of sirens during yesterday's Operation Alert, 1958, a Civil Defense test. All persons on the streets in a four-block downtown area during the five-minute alert were herded by police into nearby stores.
