YOUNGEST DERBY DRIVER: Robert Kowalczyk, 10, of 1626 Harbal Dr. sits in the uncompleted racer that he will ride down Beal Ave. on July 14 in Ann Arbor's Second Annual Soap Box Derby, Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. Kowalczyk, will be the youngest competitor in the field of about 40 boys. National rules require a boy to be at least 11 years of age by Aug. 1. Robert just makes it with a birthday on July 29.

FINISHING TOUCHES: Craig Rigan of 2229 Walter Dr. is completing his Soap Box Derby racer shortly before last Saturday's final inspection. He is one of 29 boys that will crouch low in self-built racers Sunday afternoon in search of victory on the North Campus' Beal Ave. The winner will receive a $500 bond and a trip to Akron for the All-American derby. The public is invited to Sunday's derby, which starts at 1 p.m., and the pre-race festivities scheduled to start at noon. Admission is free.

FINAL INSPECTION: This Soap Box Derby racer of Mike Bauer of 1836 Upland Dr. got its final inspection at the Armory this morning along with other racers that will speed down Beal Ave. a week from tomorrow. All cars had to pass under the bar shown here to meet the maximum height limitation. That's Richard Tice of the Ann Arbor Junior Chamber of Commerce inspecting Mike's racer. All racers have been locked up and will not be available to their drivers until shortly before derby time, 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14. The derby is free to the public.
