MUDDY AND TIRED: Ann Arbor High's Chuck Morton is a weary runner in this picture. It was made after he finished the mile race in Saturday's Class A championship here. To add to Morton's discomfort, he was nosed out for sixth place - the final one for points - at the race's end.

UNBEATEN PIONEERS TO SEEK STATE TRACK TITLE: Ann Arbor high's unbeaten track team will seek the state scholastic Class A title at East Lansing tomorrow in competition with 35 Class A schools. Although his team has been installed as a favorite, Coach Tim Ryan figures that Benton Harbor may win the meet. Benton Harbor has two athletes capable of winning four firsts for a total of 24 points as well as other probable point winners, including its relay team. The Pioneers are undefeated in five dual meets and captured the titles in the River Rouge and Albion College invitationals and in the Five-A league. From left to right the Pioneers are: Top row - Manager D. Siebert, Guy Paul, L. Nelson, W. Moss, W. Delhey, Paul Braun, E. Vlisides and Bob Twining; Middle row - Manager A. Steeb, W. Larmee, Herb Wenk, Wilbur Hann, Bill Wheatley, Wayne Newman, Glen Shankland, D. Bowerman and Coach Tim Ryan. Front row - J. Mercado, William Blaess, Ron Schairer, P. Ringquist, W. Marshall, Desmond Howarth, F. Nowland and J. Bertsos.

PIONEER RELAY TEAM VICTORIOUS OVER BIG FIELD: Ann Arbor High's 880-yard relay team, snapped in action here with only one foot touching the ground, from left to right, Henry Platt, Lee McQuiston, Phil Mercado and Bill Haidler, emerged victorious over more than 20 teams in Saturday's River Rouge Invitational meet in Yost Field House. But the Pioneers nearly chawed their fingernails off before being assured of winning. The event was run off in six sections and Ann Arbor was in the first section. Although the Pioneer club's time was 1:40.1, which is pretty fair, it wasn't so far out of class that victory was certain. So Coach Tim Ryan and the quartet above waited impatiently as section after section reeled by in slower times than 1:40.1.

WELL, I'LL BE DARNED! IT'S STILL RAINING: Ted Judson, Ann Arbor High school track star, looks dejectedly out the door of the Wines Field fieldhouse and wonders how he can get in shape for Saturday's Five-A League meeting set for Wines Field. But, on the right, he proves there's still a grin left as he laces up his shoes and prepares to get out there, rain or no rain. The Pioneers will play host to other teams in the Five-A loop for Saturday's meet which will also serve as a state regional meet. Morning events will begin at 11 o'clock and the afternoon program starts at 2 o'clock. And, as is the custom in the track world, the meet will be held rain or shine or high water. Judson, who hasn't scored less than 15 points in any track meet this year, is expected to lead the field of individual performers here in Saturday's meet.
