Controversial Overpass Locations: This aerial view shows the two locations for a proposed bridge to carry traffic over the US-12 Expressway east of Grove Rd. in Ypsilanti township. The State Highway Department says it will construct an overpass (solid line) to connect Hull and Glenwood Aves. as soon as the Township Board approves the location. Residents of the area maintain the overpass should be built about 1,000 feet eastward and connect Harris Rd. (dotted line) across the Expressway. The large housing development at lower left is part of the Shady Knoll Subdivision.

New Expressway Cutoff Opened: This $1,028,864 cutoff of the US-12 Expressway southeast of Ypsilanti was opened to traffic yesterday. The cutoff (center) carries through Expressway traffic from a point near McGregor Ave. to S. Harris Rd. (lower right). The former Expressway lanes (across center) will continue to be used for local area traffic. The project, slated for completion by Nov. 30, eliminates two sharp curves in the Expressway and shortens the actual travel distance by nearly two miles. Part of the West Willow Subdivision area is at top left.

City Dump's Future Limited: Ypsilanti's city dump, located north of the US-12 Expressway and east of S. Huron St., may be closed to non-city users in the near future unless a solution to the city's future rubbish disposal problem is found soon. The city is negotiating with the Ford Motor Co. about a possible expansion of the dump area to the east (right, above). "Nobody's happy" with the present dump operation, City Manager Olaf R. Pearson said in outlining plans to secure a new sanitary fill site, possibly to serve both the city and Ypsilanti township.

Extension of the Willow Run Expressway west beyond U-23 (Carpenter Rd.) and around Ann Arbor presents new traffic problems. Construction on the Platt Rd. overpass is shown in the lower photo. West of this, is Stone School Rd. (not shown), where the overpass has been completed, and farther west on State Rd., work has begun on an overpass to be completed in October. When completed, the Expressway will reach US-12, west of Ann Arbor. State traffic counts show that traffic during an average day on US-23 near the Expressway totals 12,000 cars. There are 6,300 automobiles traveling on the Expressway near its US-23 terminus, the same survey disclosed. Completion date for the US-23 overpass is Nov. 15, 1955.
