Pumpkin Contest Day at Eberwhite School, October 1960 Photographer: Duane Scheel
Year:
1960
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, October 31, 1960

Today Is Pumpkin Day: And you can sure that many little spooks, ghosts and goblins will be clamoring to your door with that familiar cry "trick or treat." While preparing for their "big night," the children at Eberwhite Elementary School had a pumpkin contest to see who had the pumpkin with the "most character." Lots of pumpkin owners were proud of their characters, especially Mike Fruelich (left), son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Fruelich, Eight St., who is holding his beatnik with the "shades." Marcia Madonik (center), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Madonik, Madison Pl., says she "likes the looks of Mike's pumpkin," and Kathy Jarsma (right), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jarsma, Lutz St., says she doesn't mind sitting next to that pirate. But that's probably because she's thinking about that gypsy costume she's going to wear tonight. Marcia says she is going to "dress up like Jingles" and Mike "just doesn't know yet." Eberwhite School has been having pumpkin contests since 1951. More than 100 children brought their pumpkins to school this year.
