WIN SCHOOL'S FIRST DIAMOND TITLE: This St. Thomas baseball team was assured of at least a share of the Catholic League baseball championship before tomorrow afternoon's season-ending twin bill with Lansing St. Mary's at West Park. If the local Irish can beat St. Mary's in the first game, which goes into the loop standings, they'll take the crown all alone. If they lose they'll share their school's first diamond title with the Lansing Blues who were upset, 6-3, by tail-end Jackson St. Mary's Thursday. Front row, left to right: Manager Sam Tramontin, Ken Scodeller, John Cook, Bill Milone, Mike Moynihan, Bob Tice, Ron Mercier, Dennis Fitzgerald, Ray Carpenter, and Larry Dunn. Back row, left to right: Coach Leo Wagner, Lyle Antieau, Mike Brown, Bill Anderson, Jim Conlin, Bill Tice, Dick Parker, John Shultis, and Assistant Coach Joe Rodriguez.

Joe Rodriguez, fifth from the left, first row, thumbs hooked in pockets, was one of the 18 survivors of E Company who made it to the top of the Mount Suribachi and had their picture taken by Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945. Moments later Rosenthal took the famous flag-raising shot, shown in insert. The company was in the second wave of Marines to hit the Iwo Jima each and lost 130 men in the first four days of fighting.
