AACHM Oral History: Walter Blackwell
Walter Blackwell was born in 1930 in Petersburg, Virginia. He shares memories of growing up there as well as in Mount Vernon, New York before serving in the army during the Korean War. He worked for 30 years at the Ann Arbor VA hospital, where he enjoyed helping fellow veterans. After experiencing discrimination in housing and employment, Mr. Blackwell fought for civil rights in Ann Arbor as a member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and mentored black children in his neighborhood.

Frederick F. Burrell gets a Beatle haircut at Dascola Barbers, February 1964

Frederick F. Burrell, 21, of 821 Packard went right out Monday and bought a wig styled like hairdos of the members of the Beatles music combo, but found it needed a bit of trimming to suit him. The "haircut" was done at Dascola Barbershop in Arborland. Why was Burrell, a sophomore at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, so eager to buy the wig? It seems that his girlfriend is a Bealtes fan and her enthusiasm was heightened by watching them on television Sunday night. "If I can't beat them, I'll join them" Burrell commented.

Here's a riddle suitable for the day: if there are triplet boys who are having their ninth birthday on St. Patrick's day, and their first names are Mark, David and Jonathan, what is their last name? Green, naturally. These three smiling young men are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Green, 808 Cornell, Ypsilanti. Their father is a professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University, and as you can tell from the cake and the haircuts, they're Beatle fans. That's Mark on the left, then David and Jonathan (we think).
