Harbinger of Spring: One look at the riot of spring color on the Easter egg tree of Mrs. Mary Grindstaff, 1309 Jones, and one knows that spring must be here. Over 600 eggs hang on the tree and are just a few of the 1300 or more she has decorated this year using everything from egg dye and food coloring to onion skin and walnut root. Striking patterns appearing on many of the eggs are made by dropping food coloring on a textured rag and wrapping the egg in it for several minutes. The folds and texture create design. Mrs. Grindstaff also uses bits of material to make some crazy-quilt eggs and hand-paints many. The eggs are blown out of the shells which may be saved indefinitely. There are many goose eggs in the collection.
